Black and grey · Flash

A line drawing shows a woman's profile with a skull face, her hair arranged in curling, swirled sections. A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody crossed the high pass at Krelin without showing the keeper their face, and the keeper did not look at faces. She looked at the frame. Her name was Mirela Vosk and she had kept the gate for forty winters, and in all that time she had never asked a traveller for coin, only for the small oval cameo each of them carried, the kind a mother gives a child before a long road.

Ilse came up the pass in the first snow with her brother's cameo sewn into her coat lining. It showed a woman in profile, her hair swirled into curls like frost on a window, and her face was bare bone beneath the lace of the filigree. Ilse had never liked it. Her brother had died in the lowland fever, and she had brought the cameo because the priest said the dead could not cross without a name to carry.

Mirela held the oval to the lamp, turned it once, and said nothing for so long that the wind got into the hut. Then she laughed, which Ilse had not expected. 'He sent you with his face,' she said. 'Most people bring their own. The skull is what they wear when they have looked at the road too long.' She handed the cameo back and pushed open the far door, and beyond it the valley lay green and ordinary under the thaw.

Ilse went down into it with the frame warm in her palm. She did not look back at the gate, and she did not feel the thing she had feared, that the lowland would be a place where her brother was missing. It was only a place. At the first farm she asked for a bowl of soup and a needle, and sewed the cameo into the outside of her coat, face out, where the rain could reach it.
