Black and grey realism tattoo of a demon and an angel embracing beneath bat and feathered wings, placed on the upper back.

Demon and angel embrace with wings on back

Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A large black and grey tattoo shows a horned demon with bat-like wings holding an angel with feathered wings. The two figures embrace while seated on a swirling pedestal that extends down the design. The shading is smooth and soft, with strong contrast in the dark background behind the wings and gentle greys on the skin-toned figures and feathers.

Tobias found the feather on the gallery rail before the lamp was lit, long and white, its tip faintly scorched. Mrs Pennock at the shop in Hallowell Cove said it meant a bad winter. Tobias had stopped listening to her years ago, but he kept the feather in his coat pocket anyway.

That night the sea came up black under a low sky and the lamp would not catch. He climbed the iron stair with the oil can and found a woman sitting on the top step, bare-armed in the cold, her hair the colour of wet sand. Beside her, leaning on the railing, stood a thing with curled horns and leathery wings folded like umbrellas. It was telling her, in a patient voice, that the glass needed cleaning, not blessing.

They argued about the wick, the ships, and whether the rocks had been set out by God or by mischief. Tobias said nothing and worked the burner by feel. Hours passed. The woman laughed once, a sound like a bell rung under water, and the thing looked at her as though she were the only lit window in the county.

At four the lamp caught with a soft roar and its beam swept out over the water, passing across a trawler coming home. Tobias opened the log and wrote: two visitors, both useful. When he looked up the stair was empty, and on the rail lay a second feather, dark as ink.
