Black and grey shaded diamond tattoo on the lower back of a woman with long dark hair, photographed from behind.

Diamond tattoo on lower back

Geometric · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A small diamond outline sits on the lower back, drawn with dark linework and shaded in grey to suggest facets and depth. The image is taken from behind, with the subject wearing a black bra and low-rise denim, and a partly visible tattoo appears lower on the hip. The warm, dim lighting and softly blurred room behind give the tattoo a plain, central focus.

The flaw in the stone was the shape of a fingernail paring, and Mr Abrahams said it was the only honest thing about it. He held the loupe to his eye and turned the diamond under the lamp until the light broke into little grey staircases. "Everyone wants the shine," he said. "Nobody asks what the shadows are doing."

Dilys was nineteen and had spent a month drawing facets on squared paper, sharpening her pencil with a craft knife until the lead went blunt in her fingers. Her first outline had been too clean, every line ruled and bright. Mr Abrahams took the sheet, rubbed the edges with his thumb until the strokes softened into smoke, and handed it back. "Depth is what you leave out," he said. "Put the dark where the light can't reach."

In February a woman from Golders Green brought in her late mother's ring and asked for the stone to be recut for her daughter's engagement. Dilys worked on it alone after the others had gone, the bench lamp humming, the wheel whispering against the tang. She polished the crown until it threw rainbows across the ceiling tiles. When she checked it under the loupe, the fingernail flaw was gone, ground out by her own hand without her noticing.

Mr Abrahams saw it the next morning and said nothing. He paid her the full fee, then took the squared paper from her drawer and pinned it above his bench, where the grey facets still ran in their careful, unlit lines.
