Dear Tom, The gymnasium comes down on Friday, so for three evenings I have sat at the kitchen table with the old council plans spread under the teapot, trying to remember which of us was right about the lintel. You always said I drew like a man who had never once been told off. Enclosed is the copy I promised. The lotus is the carving Alf Dunn cut above the side door in 1952, and I have drawn it exactly as he left it, every petal struck from a single pivot and each one a hair's breadth off the last. The triangle underneath is the pediment. The dots are where his chisel slipped on the wet stone and he decided, after a long look, to leave them alone.

I thought about sending the drawing to the reunion committee, but they would only frame it and hang it in the foyer next to the trophy cabinet. I would rather it went to you. You are the only person who will notice that the dots are spaced unevenly, and that the uneven part is the best bit.

Bring your compasses on Saturday. We can stand under the lintel before they take it away and you can tell me which of us drifted off true. I expect it was me. I expect you will be kind about it, the way you were when I cried over my first set square.
