Crescent moon of roses and blossoms line drawing

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

A line drawing on translucent tracing paper shows a crescent moon built from roses, peony-style blooms, small five-petalled blossoms, leaves and small berry sprigs. The linework is thin and even in dark ink, with no shading or fill. The image is in black ink on a cream background, and the composition curves around the empty centre of the crescent.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The boats were late the week the moon went thin, and Ada Fenwick walked the harbour wall with a lamp in one hand and a basket of cut flowers in the other. She had taken them from the walled garden behind the curing sheds: roses gone blowsy in the cold, one late peony, white blackthorn blossom, and sprigs of rowan berries that rattled when she set them down. Her grandmother had always laid flowers on the wall in a curve, with the open side turned to the sea, because the moon was the fishermen's clock and the hollow of it was the gate the boats came home through.

She built the curve stem by stem on the wet stone. The first rose was for her husband, who had gone out in the Mary Lowe twenty years back and never come in. The peony was for the Cormack brothers, who had quarrelled over a net and then gone out together anyway. The blossoms were for the children who had grown up and left, and the berries for the ones who had stayed and not been asked how they were. When the curve was finished she did not fill the centre. Her grandmother had never filled it either.

At first light she counted the sails coming round the point. Ten, and then a long gap, and then the eleventh, the Mary Lowe, low in the water and towing a drifting hull behind her with a rope of salt-grey hemp. Tom stood at the bow with his cap in his fist, lifting it once toward the wall. The wind had stripped half the petals off the curve in the night, but the empty space in the middle was still clear, and Ada looked at it for a long while before she went down to take the rope.
