The cook swore the kettle had been cold since Michaelmas, yet every morning the hearth in the high hall burned green, and the mistress of Thornwold walked through the smoke as though it were only weather. Osric the steward had learned not to ask questions, so when he found the spindle box behind the tapestry frames, he carried it down to her unopened, the way one carries a dead bird.

Inside lay a dozen bent spindles, a bottle of greenish glass stoppered with wax, and a scrap of card no bigger than a playing card. The ink had faded to the colour of weak tea. Only two words were still legible at the edge where the rest had rotted away: TRUE LO.

She turned the card over in her long fingers and laughed, not kindly. The man who had written it, she said, was a garden gnome in the orchard now, and he had never once been able to spell. She told Osric to bank the fire, and when he came back at dusk she had not thrown the scrap away. It was tucked into the lining of her cloak, against the place where her heart was supposed to be.

Every dawn after that, she laid the card on the hearth. The green flame bent toward it, shrank to a small blue ember, and held there for the length of a slow breath before it climbed again to the rafters. Nobody in Thornwold asked her why, and Osric, who could read perfectly well, never told anyone what the rest of the words had said.
