Full floral sleeve of roses and peonies on an arm

Realism · Shoulder · Colour · Photo

A woman's arm is covered from shoulder to forearm with a full sleeve of realistic flowers, including large roses, peonies and smaller clustered blossoms, set among green leaves and foliage. The flowers are shaded with soft gradients and fine detail, in warm pinks, peach, orange and red with muted greens. The arm is angled across the frame against a window and brick wall, with the sleeve filling most of the image.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The peaches on the south wall of Haddon's orchard had gone soft at the shoulders, and Maud Elsing knew she had until Saturday to pick them before the wasps got there first. She worked the ladder with a basket on her hip while old Mrs Pryce called over the hedge that the blush on the fruit was the same colour as the peonies Maud had been painting all summer on the lid of a trunk.

The trunk belonged to Anwen Clay, who wanted roses on it for her daughter's wedding, the kind that looked as if you could pick them off the wood. Maud had layered them forty times over, pink over peach over ochre, each petal a skin of thin varnish until the lid glowed like the inside of a shell. Still, the peonies never sat right. They looked as though they were holding their breath.

On the Friday, with the last crate loaded onto the cart, Maud carried the trunk out under the damson tree and sat beside it with a heel of bread and cheese. Anwen came out, looked at the lid for a long while, and said nothing. Then she reached down and touched one rose with a fingertip, and laughed because it was still tacky. "You've painted them open," she said. "Mine won't be open until the day she walks down the lane. After that they stay open for good."

Maud didn't know what to say to that, so she left the trunk under the tree overnight with the lid up. In the morning a wasp was crawling across the largest peony, slow and certain, as if it had found the real thing and meant to taste it. Maud watched it go, then went to find the varnish.
