A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

On the island of Carrow, where the tide ran over the causeway twice a day and the gulls argued with everyone, a fishwife named Maud Tullet kept a brass lamp on her windowsill that she had never once lit. Her grandmother had told her it held a spirit with a long memory for favours and a short temper for being disturbed.

One winter a red-haired girl came up out of the harbour at dusk, dripping, with a small yellow fish trailing at her shoulder like a nervous dog. She asked for shoes and a name. Maud gave her a pair of her own boots and called her Wren, because the girl would not say where she had come from, only that the sea had grown too loud to sleep through.

In spring the girl knocked the lamp from the sill, and out came a blue spirit in a coat of smoke, who bowed and asked for three wishes before complaining that nobody ever asked for anything sensible. Maud wished the cliff roses would bloom through the frost. The spirit shrugged, and the whole path went red. Wren asked to walk on land without missing the sea. The spirit frowned and said that was a bargain, not a wish, and it would cost her the water.

Wren chose the land. Each morning she crossed the causeway in her borrowed boots, and each night she danced barefoot on the wet rocks while the fish at her shoulder sang to the tide. In autumn a storm came in with a grey hooded wind, and Maud found the lamp empty on the sill, the rocks bare, and a single red shoe lying on the sand where the tide had drawn back smooth as a ribbon.
