Dog with angel wings and halo

Mixed · Flash

A sketched outline of a dog seen from behind, sitting with its head raised, drawn in loose black brush-like strokes. A black halo floats above its head and two lavender wings spread out to either side, with feathered tips. A small black ball sits near one front paw, and the plain white background leaves the design isolated.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The barge Mallow had carried coal up the Trent for forty years, and her dog Pilot was never once allowed on the cabin roof. He sat on the bow instead, head up, watching the lock gates like a clerk waiting for a bell. Each time the water rose and the gates groaned open, he dropped his rubber ball on the wet planks and nudged it with his nose toward whoever was coming through.

Old Hettie Rowe, who kept the lock at Cuckney Weir, said dogs who waited that patiently were owed something. She tied a scrap of blue silk to his collar and told him that when the river finally took the last of the barges, he would be given wings to carry his ball across to the far bank. Pilot did not understand her, but he kept sitting.

The winter the Mallow sank at her moorings, the ice cracked under her bow in the dark. Nobody heard the dog. In the morning Hettie walked the towpath and found the ball lying dry and round on the frost, a few feet from where the boards had split.

She threw it out over the water every morning after that. Some days it came back to her boots, rolled by something she could not see, and she always said thank you to the grey air and went home lighter.
