Line art fairy with green wings

Fine line · Colour · Flash

A stylised fairy with yellow hair gathered in a bun, closed eyes and hands pressed together, drawn in thin flowing green and yellow lines. Her wings sweep out to either side in long, tapering green strokes, and faint grey swirling outlines sit behind the figure. The design is centred on a plain white background with a small green motif below.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell had the ovens lit by four, the way Mr Okafor liked, and she was cross because the rye had turned sour overnight. She went into the back store for the dried sage and found a fairy asleep in the open flour sack, no bigger than a teaspoon, her hands pressed together under her chin as if she were about to say grace over a loaf.

Her wings were green and long, thin as blades of grass, and she had tied her yellow hair into a bun with a curl of basil stalk. Nell held her breath. The fairy opened one eye, saw the bread peel in Nell's hand, and sighed. "You've let the cold in," she said. "The dough can feel it."

Nell apologised, which surprised them both. The fairy said the rye had soured because someone had been stirring it with a spoon full of old worry, and that a pinch more salt and a longer rest would mend it. She showed Nell with small green fingers how to fold the dough in quarters, slowly, the way you would close a letter you did not want to finish. Nell did as she was told. The loaves came out dark and blistered and smelling faintly of rain.

When the first grey light came through the shutters, the fairy was gone. On the flour bin lay a single green sprig tied with red thread. Nell kept it on the sill above the proving drawer, and every morning after that she left the back door open an inch, just in case.
