Realistic eyes behind cracked stone on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows two eyes framed by cracked, weathered stone, with one larger eye on the right and a smaller, partly shadowed eye on the left. The shading is smooth and detailed, with strong contrast in the lids, irises and stone texture. The design fills the forearm horizontally against a dark background, and the image is in black and grey only.

Nobody in Ashby Cross minded the rain, but they minded the wall. It ran behind the fish stalls, grey and cracked straight down the middle, and in wet weather two dark holes showed through where the mortar had gone. Old Mrs Tull swore one was a left eye and the other a right, and that they followed you along the cobbles whenever you carried short weight.

The stallholders laughed until Piers, a boy who sold eels for his uncle, watched a man in a dented helmet walk straight up to the wall with his collar turned against the wet. The stone split like bread. Behind it the eyes were large and patient, the way a heron watches a pond. The man did not flinch. He only asked the boy, in a voice like gravel in a bucket, whether the weights on the Thursday stall were true.

Piers knew they were not. Half the stall had been pressing thumbs on the brass for years. He said so, and the big eye narrowed until its lashes met like the teeth of a comb. "Then you will tell the scales," the man said, "and you will tell them every morning until they listen." The stone closed behind him, and Piers ran home through the rain with his heart knocking against his ribs.

Next morning the wall was dry in a patch the size of a hand, and every brass weight on the Thursday stall had been filed level, with a fresh scratch on each. Uncle Harry stood by the eels with a face like a shut door. Nobody in the market ever again complained about the rain.
