A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dad said the cows wouldn't care what colour the wall was, so I painted the milking parlour wall the week after the thaw, with Mum's old tins of emulsion and a brush borrowed from the feed merchant. Nobody asked for a dolphin. Nobody asks for much on a farm in January, least of all a sixteen-year-old with numb fingers and a bucket of teal she'd mixed too thin.

The yard was white that winter. Every morning the water trough froze at the edges and Tom broke the skin with the back of a fork, and every morning the heifers stood with their breath hanging over them like washing. I worked on the dolphin between the early and late milkings, in the gap when the machine hummed and nobody needed me. I gave it a lilac belly because the sky over the top field went that colour at four o'clock, and green waves I didn't properly understand but kept adding anyway.

Mum came in on the last Saturday of the month with a flask and stood a long time looking at it. She said the dolphin looked like it was trying to get somewhere. I said it was leaping out of a wave, that's what they do, and she said, "Out of what, love? We're forty miles from anything with salt in it."

I didn't have an answer, so I put down the brush and handed her a cup. Through the open door the trough had frozen over again, and a single hoof-print in the frost ran straight across it, clean as a line on a page.
