Teal dragonfly on the top of a foot
Other · Mixed · Photo
A small dragonfly sits on the top of a foot, between the big toe and the second toe. Its wings are filled with teal and blue tones, while the body is a column of dark dots and short curved antennae. The background is a dark, plain surface, and the pink nail polish with white tips contrasts with the skin.

The mill at Sallow Ford had stopped turning the summer the river went green, and Ada Pennock would not stand for it. She walked the bank each dawn with a rake over one shoulder and a dented pan under her arm, and every morning a dragonfly followed her, hovering at the height of her ear as though someone had sent it to keep count.

The old women of Caddow Vale said dragonflies were drowned souls come back to check the sluices were kept clean. Ada did not believe them. She believed in the rotten lock gate and her uncle's debts, and she believed the river was a thief. Still, when the dragonfly settled on the rim of her pan, its wings the blue-green of a kingfisher's back and its long dark body ticking like a clock, she found herself talking to it the way she talked to the mule.
On the ninth night she waded out with a lantern and found the trouble: reeds knotted across the sluice, a cartwheel wedged in the gap, and a silver fish the size of her thumb, dead in the silt. She worked until her fingers bled and the moon sank behind the poplars. The dragonfly sat on the lantern hook the whole time, and when the last reed came free it lifted away over the water and did not look back.
At dawn the wheel turned with a groan that woke the whole village. The tax clerk from Halvern came and went without a word, because a mill that grinds is a mill that pays. Ada chalked a small mark on the gate post, a dragonfly with a column of dots for a body, and beneath it the words her mother had taught her: keep the water moving.
