Blue nautilus shell on an ankle
Ankle · Colour · Photo
A small nautilus shell is tattooed on the outer side of an ankle, drawn in a blue outline with a spiral centre and ridged chambers. The shading moves from deep blue to pale aqua and white, giving the shell a rounded, dimensional look. The shell sits slightly above the heel against plain skin, and a second bare foot is partly visible on a wooden surface in the background.

The pressure gauges in Lock Nine have been ticking down since the last shift, and I am the only one awake to hear them. Ottilie left a mug of cold tea on the console and a note saying she had gone to bed in the lower ring, where the warmth still holds. I am writing this on the back of a maintenance slate because the old logbook froze two winters ago, and because the people who built this station liked their records on paper, which is the kind of stubbornness I have come to admire.

The spiral is the thing I keep returning to. Every chamber of the station is wound like the inside of a nautilus, each sealed room a little larger than the one before, so the air can be bled off from the outer rings without touching the heart where we keep the seed stock. My grandmother used to say the shell was the first machine that knew how to grow its own house. I thought that was sentimental until I started counting the bulkheads on the night watch and found I could not tell where one chamber ended and the next began.
This morning the outer seal on chamber four failed, and for eleven minutes I watched the frost bloom across the viewport like a cold blue tide. I did what the manual said. I shut the inner door, sealed my own pod, and waited. When the readings steadied I went down to check the damage, and found Ottilie's bare footprints on the grating, pale and fading, where she had walked to the window to watch the failure. She had left her boots by the lock. She knew the rule about leaving the sealed rings, and she broke it anyway, and I am glad she did, because she is the only reason the seed stock is still cold enough to keep.
