The kettle has gone cold twice since I started this, so forgive the handwriting. Your father would have laughed at me for writing to you on the back of the seed catalogue, but the postmaster in Halvard has no paper left and the boat leaves at dawn, so the catalogue will have to do. The beans are in. Pieter dug the north rows himself and only cursed the stones four times, which I count as a miracle.

You asked in your last letter whether the lamp still burns in the window of the old chandler's house. It does. I climb up every evening and trim the wick, the way you showed me, with the good scissors that smell of oil. Mrs Veldt says it is foolish to keep a light for a ship that may never come home. I told her a light is not for the ship. It is so that whoever is out there knows which way the land lies.

I have decided to go down to the harbour on Thursday and ask Captain Sorrel for passage. He says the crossing is no worse than it was in your grandmother's day, and he says it with the face of a man who has never been seasick. I am not afraid of it. I have been afraid of a great many things these last two winters, and I find I have used up the fear on them.

Come home, or let me come to you. Either will do.
