Fine line circular design on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A raised hand shows a small circular tattoo on the inner wrist. The design uses thin black linework to form a ring containing smaller circles, angled straight lines and arc shapes. The ink is solid black and grey against a pale, creased fabric backdrop, with the tattoo centred on the lower forearm.

Nell had been mending the fair's brass dial since the first frost, when the showman's boy dropped it off the back of the dodgems and cracked its face. Every evening she sat on an upturned crate behind the Ghost Train with a jeweller's loupe screwed to one eye and a tin of fine pens beside her, copying the ring onto paper before she dared touch it. Mr Ambrose Tull, who owned the fair, said the pattern had come from his grandmother's ticket booth in Margate, and that it told the time in a language nobody spoke any more.

"It tells you where the rides are going," he said, "if you know how to read the arcs."
She didn't believe him until the night the generator failed and every bulb on the Waltzer died at once. The small round dots inside the ring were still glowing faintly blue in the dark, and the straight lines slid between them like the hands of a clock running backwards. Nell traced them with a cold finger, counting the circles the way she counted stitches, and saw that the dots sat in the same order as the painted cars on the track.
In the morning the crate was empty and the dial lay face up on the mud, its cracked glass whole again. Tull found Nell asleep beside it with her drawing folded in her lap, every line inked over in her own careful hand. He held the paper to the grey light, read it the way he would read a timetable, and tucked it into his waistcoat without a word. She understood then that the fair had never been moving from town to town at all. It had been following the pattern home.
