When the lift at Harrow Point stuck between the ninth and tenth floors, the people below said the building had gone to sleep with its mouth open. Nobody agreed on how long it stayed that way. Some said a week, some said a whole winter.

Mrs Ilse Bannerman, who had lived on the eleventh floor since the blocks were new, took a stick of chalk from her handbag and drew a line from her door toward the stairwell. She drew it in dots, because a solid line looked like a wall to her and she wanted people to be able to step through it. At the far end she put an arrowhead pointing back the way she had come, and beside it two small chevrons, one behind the other, to say that here the stairs turn.

Her grandson Dario, nine years old, thought it was nonsense. He followed the dots anyway, down past the dead lift, counting each one under his breath. At the chevrons he found the turn, a concrete landing with a wilted fern and a window full of rain. Below him the stairs went on for what felt like forever.

By spring every floor had a line. Nobody remembered who chalked the first one, and when the caretaker scrubbed the stairwell the dots came back overnight, fainter each time, always pointing down. Dario grew up and moved to a city with working lifts. Sometimes, waiting for a train, he caught himself counting dots on the tiles, and he looked up half expecting the arrow to show him the way home.
