A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The guild had sold the rain in the spring, the way it sold everything, so Ada Vell climbed the pump house ladder each night to count what was left. Four drops, she told the star. Five if the wind was kind. The star was only a nail hammered into the iron rail by someone long dead, but she had named it Tallow, and she spoke to it the way her grandmother had spoken to the well.

On the thirtieth night a cloud came over the salt flats no bigger than a thumbprint and stayed. Ada waited beneath it with her tin. The first drop struck the rail and beaded on the star. The second ran down the iron and gathered at the foot of the ladder. The third fell past her ear before she could catch it, and it went down through the grating into the dry cistern, where nobody had looked for a hundred years.

Her mother had taught her a rule. You do not chase water downhill. You let it find its own low place and you sit beside it. So Ada climbed down and sat on the cold rung with her hands in her lap. The cloud thinned and drifted east. Somewhere below, a single drop hit stone, then another, and then a slow steady sound began that she had not heard since she was small.

By morning the guild men were at the grating with their gauges, furious and disbelieving. Ada did not tell them where the tin had gone. She climbed back up to the rail, touched the star with one wet finger, and told Tallow it had been right after all.
