Heart with ribbon on the upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A single outlined heart sits on the upper arm, with a ribbon banner wrapped across its middle and trailing tails at the sides. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black against plain skin. The background is a white rolled-up t-shirt sleeve and a dark backdrop, which keeps the small design in focus.

Sit closer to the range, the pair of you, and mind the cat, she's had the warm spot all afternoon. Right. The winter the beck froze to the bottom, old Ruth Fairweather went out to break the ice on the trough and found a tin heart lying in the straw of the end stall.

It was the size of a hen's egg, cut from a biscuit tin and gone soft at the edges, with a red ribbon wound round its middle and the ends left trailing like a pair of sheep's tails. Tucked under the ribbon was a square of paper with one line in pencil: Ask me again at the thaw. There was no name on it, and nobody in the valley would own to leaving it there.

She put it on the windowsill beside the paraffin lamp and turned it every morning so the ribbon faced the glass. That February the ewes lambed early, nine of them in a fortnight, and she walked the field at three with a storm lantern and her hands bare, pulling lambs out of the snow and carrying them to the kitchen in a laundry basket. The tin heart watched all of it. Her nephew Tom said it was giving her ideas, and she told him to fetch more coal.

The thaw came on a Tuesday, all drip and running gutters. A lad in a borrowed coat came up the lane with a second tin heart in his palm, its ribbon blue, and asked whether the question still stood. Ruth looked at the one on the sill, then at him, then at the snow going grey in the lane. Go on, then, she said, and hold your hand out flat, you'll let the heat out of the door.
