Small pizza slice tattoo on the ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo of a pizza slice sits on the side of the ribcage, with the tip pointing down and the crust at the top. It is drawn in black outline with simple interior details suggesting pepperoni and melted cheese dripping from the base. The subject is shown in close crop against a light grey loose-fitting top and jeans, with the tattoo as the clear focal point.

The oven in the cider barn has been running since six, and the wasps have given up on the windfalls and started on the cheese. You stand at the paddle with flour to your elbows, shouting over the tractor that Dev's brother has parked too close to the perry press, and somebody asks whether the pizza is ready yet, which is the sixth time since noon.

Pepperoni is the only thing the orchard lacks, so you have sent Marisol down the lane in the van with a list written on the back of a pickers' rota. She returns with the pepperoni, a crate of Discovery apples going soft at the edges, and news that the farmer's dog has eaten a whole wheel of Lancashire. Nobody minds. You slide the last pie out, cut it into eight wedges with the knife that has been used for everything, and watch the cheese harden into amber drips on the board as it cools.

At dusk the pickers sit on upturned crates in the long grass, and the slice you keep for yourself is the one with the most pepperoni, lopsided, the cheese pulled into a string that snaps when you lean back. Marisol takes the corner piece and says it is a crime against Naples. You agree with her, and eat it anyway, watching the rows of trees fade from green to black.

Next year you will have a van of your own with a name painted on the side, but for now the only sign of it is the grease on your fingers and a windfall rolling slowly across the flagstones, where nobody has bothered to pick it up.
