Dotwork mandala flower design
Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash
A symmetrical mandala-style flower drawn in black linework, with layered petals radiating from a small centre dot. Petal sections are filled with stippled dotwork that builds shading toward the middle and edges. The drawing is in black ink on white paper and sits centred within the frame, with a plain background.

The last outer petal was still bare when I sat down at Winifred's bench, the ink already drying in its little brass cup. Her pens lay in a row beside the lamp, nibs wiped, each labelled in square capitals: FINE, FINER, FINEST. I had counted the dots on the other petals a dozen times. Eleven hundred to a leaf on the inside rows, more toward the rim where the shading had to deepen, and never a line drawn first. She used to say a line was a promise a needle could never keep.

The commission had come from a man in Leeds who wanted a flower to match the ceiling rose in his late mother's hall. He had sent a photograph of the plaster, chipped at one edge. Winifred had sketched the whole mandala in pencil before her hands gave out, then handed it to me with one instruction: the centre was not to be touched.
My first dots came out in clumps, too heavy along the vein, so I lifted the nib and started again on scrap card. By midnight I had a palm-sized sample that looked like frost on a bedroom window. Only then did I understand why she never inked the middle. The shading built outward from the bare dot, so the eye fell inward and rested there, the way it rests on a fixed point in a stormy sea.
At dawn I finished the last petal and sat back with the magnifier. The centre was still white, one small pure circle no bigger than a pinhead. I left it that way, wrapped the drawing in tissue, and pressed the lid down on the ink pot against the dust.
