Symmetrical mandala design in black line
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A radially symmetrical mandala drawn in black ink on white paper, built from layered petal shapes, overlapping circles and a small central rosette. Fine dotted lines, hatching and small diamond motifs fill the petals and outer points. The image is entirely black line on white, with no shading, colour or background elements.

Brother Anselm had spent three weeks on the same sheet of vellum before the abbot came to see whether the rose was finished. It was not. Every petal he drew sat true to the one before it, eight points, then sixteen, but the circles would not close. Each time his compass point returned to the starting mark it sat a hair to the left, as if the wheel were turning on a slightly different axle.

Prior Ealdred held the sheet to the candle and counted the outer points with a thick finger. "Eleven," he said. "You drew twelve."
"I drew twelve."
"Then the ink is lying, or you are." He set the sheet down with care, as though it might lift away. "Start from the middle, brother. Everything true begins where nothing moves."
That night Anselm sat with the vellum until the bell for matins, and in the candlelight he saw that the dotted lines were not decoration. They marked the places where he had lifted the pen and set it down again, a record of every pause. Where the dots thickened near the rosette, he had hesitated for a long time, counting his breath. Where the small diamonds sat at the points, his hand had shaken, and he had drawn each square again and again until it was square.
He took a fresh sheet, pricked the centre once with a needle, and drew the rosette without lifting the pen. It came out perfectly round and closed on its first line. Outside it, the petals began to follow him, one circle at a time, each a little less afraid of the edge.
