Black ink mandala flower design
Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash
A symmetrical mandala drawn in black ink on white paper, built from layered petal shapes radiating around a central rosette. The linework is fine and precise, with areas filled by stippled dots and hatching, and bold solid black arcs forming the outer ring. The design is monochrome and centred on a plain background.

The hall smelt of floor polish and the same squash we drank at fifteen, and I had been standing by the trestle table for twenty minutes before Gareth Lusk found me, a paper cup in each hand. He still held his shoulders the way he had in Mr Brennan's geometry room, as if the ceiling needed checking.

Brennan made us draw circles with compasses until our fingers ached. Gareth never touched the compass. He drew his rings freehand with a fine-liner, the nib barely kissing the paper, and Brennan would hold them up to the window and sigh. I was the one who did the centres. I pricked the tiny dot where the compass point went in and filled the back pages of my exercise book with rosettes while the lesson carried on without me.
'You kept that,' he said, and drew a folded sheet from his jacket, soft as cloth from handling. It was a flower built of petals, six rings of them, the outer arcs thick and black as if he had gone over them with his thumb. Dots crept along the edges like frost. In the very centre, where I would have started, there was a pinhole, not drawn but punched through the paper.
'That's where you put the point in,' he said. 'Every time. You never let me start in the middle.' I had no memory of it, but he had kept my mistake for thirty years and built the whole flower around it. I folded the sheet along its old creases and slid it into my bag. When the DJ started up I did not go and dance. I stayed by the window and counted the rings, all the way out to the edge.
