Dotwork mandala tattoo on the top of a foot

Dotwork · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A symmetrical mandala with a central dotted circle, petal-like points and smaller circles fills the top of a foot, extending toward the ankle. The design is outlined in fine black linework, with stippled dot shading creating soft grey gradients in the centre and lower petals. The image is in colour-free black and grey, with a pale sheet showing a similar mandala drawing behind the foot.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit closer, you lot, the fire's only warm for those who lean in. The mason I mean was called Irrah, and he laid floors for the kings of the river towns, which tells you he was a rich man's pet and a poor man's son at the same time. He worked with a bronze point no thicker than a barley grain, and he would not draw his circles with a cord. He pricked them. One dot, then the next, until the grey rose up out of the stone like dust off a road.

The king wanted a floor that would make a visitor stop, so Irrah laid petals round a centre of dots so thick the eye fell into it and could not climb out again. Each petal held a small pale stone at its heart, round as an egg. Masons came from three cities to look, and they went home quiet. The king asked how long it had taken. Irrah said he had not counted, because counting would have been a kind of leaving.

On the last morning, when the scaffold was down, the steward found one dot missing at the lowest point of the outer ring, a hollow no wider than a pinprick. He had the whole floor lifted to find the error. Irrah only laughed and said every floor needs one place where the pattern lets the walker in.

The steward wanted it mended. The king said leave it. And so it stayed. When the rain comes, the hollow fills, and a little sky sits in the floor at the bottom of the mandala, and that is the one thing in the palace nobody ever bothered to sweep.
