Dotwork moon over mountains
Dotwork · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a large full moon with craters and shadowed patches rendered in fine black dots, set above two outlined mountain ridges with dotted shading. Small star and sparkle motifs sit around the moon in the upper part of the composition. The ink is black throughout, and the warm reddish tone of the photograph comes from the lighting rather than the tattoo.

You are the one trusted with the key to the upper barn, because the bell rope in the chapel has rotted through and someone has to ring the hour from the ridge path before the speeches. Ffion pinned a paper moon to your lapel that the children cut from a cereal box, and it keeps catching on the wool of your jacket as you climb past the last gate, the wet grass soaking through your good shoes.

The moon rises over Carn Ddu before you reach the stile, so large and close that you stop and lose the hymn you were humming. Its face is pocked the way the old survey map in the post office is pocked, with the spots where the slate tips slid and the lake that drowned Cwm Isaf in 1911. You have always thought the dark seas looked like ink pressed through thin paper, and tonight they look like a ghost of something written on the other side.
At the top the stars come out in the corners of the sky like someone flicking a pen. Your uncle said the moon would be too bright for the lamp, and he was right, but you bring it anyway and stand beside the bell frame in your ruined shoes. When the hour strikes you pull the rope by hand, hard, and the sound rolls down the valley over the roofs and the wet slate and the field where the marquee sags with rain.
Below, the couple walk out of the barn with their lantern held high, and they stop at the bottom of the path to look up at you and at the moon behind you. You raise the lamp, though nobody needs it, and switch it off, and the whole valley goes silver for a moment before the lights come back on in the farmhouse windows.
