Sunflower with a moon centre
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A black line drawing of a sunflower whose centre is a shaded, greyscale full moon with craters. The petals are outlined with bold, clean linework and some hatched shading along their edges. Small stars, dots and a fine curved line sit in the background at the top right and bottom right of the composition.

Sit closer, the fire's low and my voice only carries so far. The sun does the looking in the day, and I'll tell you what the sunflowers above Ardmor were doing at night, because nobody else in the valley will admit to it.

Old Tamsin kept the terraces above the river, and every harvest she cut the heads and hung them in her cart shed to dry. Her husband Bran said the flowers were only chasing light, the way any fool chases a lamp. But one autumn, after the first frost, the moon came down low over the ridge and caught in the tallest bloom at the end of the row. It hung there like a coin in a dish. Bran swore it was a cheese wheel. Tamsin said nothing and went to fetch her shawl.
Through the cold weeks the moon stayed. Each night it rose a little later and sat a little lower in the flower's middle, its craters grey as old thumbprints. The petals that faced it did not turn to the east at dawn the way their sisters did. They kept their faces up, leaning inward, as though they were listening.
On the last night of the year the moon slid off the petals and rolled down the slope into the river. Tamsin walked down in her bare feet and waded in to her knees, and by morning the bloom at the end of the row had gone to seed with a ring of white in its heart. She saved that seed. Every spring since, the valley's sunflowers have opened slowly at dusk, and Tamsin's great-granddaughter still counts the petals each night, one for every turn the moon has made.
