Yin yang with mountain landscape

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

A circular pen drawing divides a yin yang symbol into a cream half and a black half. The cream side holds a round orb among wispy clouds, while the black side holds a second orb above a mountain range with pine trees at the lower edge. The fine linework uses stippled shading on the rocks and clouds, and the design is entirely black and grey on a cream background.

The 17.42 was late again, so Nell Harker stood on the platform at Scarrow Halt with the lamp unlit and watched the sun and the moon argue over the ridge. They never shared the sky for long at this height. Her father used to say the valley belonged to the moon and the fells to the sun, and that the railway had been laid to keep the two of them from quarrelling.

He had kept the halt for thirty-one years and filled one register book each winter in copperplate. Every entry began with the weather and ended with the minute the last train cleared the cutting. Nell had never once seen a line crossed out. Then, the week after the funeral, she found a page in his hand where a faint pencil note sat beside a little drawing of two circles: Swap them once. See if she comes.

The signal box key hung where it always had, on a nail behind the stove. Nell lit the stove, climbed the ladder and pulled the lever painted over in red, feeling the rods shiver away down the line toward the cream-coloured valley. For a moment nothing happened. Then the sun slid off the black hills, the moon sank into the grey rock, and the 17.42 came round the bend low and bright, slowing beside the platform as if it had been waiting for someone to get the order right.
