Dotwork starburst pattern on a limb

Dotwork · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A close-up of a limb covered in repeating black starburst rosettes built from radiating lines and fine dots. The rosettes overlap and tighten toward the edges, creating a dense geometric pattern across the skin. Only black ink is visible against a warm, softly blurred background with vertical stripes and a hand out of focus at the top left.

Forty crates of floor tiles, unglazed terracotta, each one stamped with a starburst the size of a side plate. The rosettes were built from fine dots that thickened where the rays met, so every star seemed to pull the next one closer, like a crowd leaning in to hear something. My gran kept a bowl of that same pattern on her dresser. She used to run her thumb around the rim and say the dots were there so the eye had somewhere to rest. The manifest said decorative ceramics, no declared value. I counted tiles for an hour in the cold and found one cracked, a single ray broken clean off.

I wrote it down as found, cleared the load and signed the form. Pritchard asked if there was a problem. I said no, only that somebody had taken great trouble over something nobody would ever see once it was laid under a sideboard. He laughed and said that was the trade. When the barrier lifted, the first grey light came up behind the hedgerow and the bars of the gate caught it, and I drove home past the pale fields thinking of all those small stars face down in the dark, waiting for someone to lay them out.
