Double-headed eagle shield on back

Back · Mixed · Photo

A large shield with a riveted edge sits across the upper back, with a double-headed eagle with spread wings centred on it. The eagle is shaded in grey and black, giving it volume, while the shield is filled with red and pinkish tones. The tattoo fills most of the frame against a plain skin background, with a room and stairs visible behind.

Hold the lamp lower, boy, the rivets won't seat true in the dark, and neither will a man's nerve. Listen now. On the night the bells stopped in Varnica, old Mateo Pell was still hammering at his bench on the Street of Copper, because the captain had ordered twenty shields by dawn, and a shield-maker who sleeps is a shield-maker with a rope round his neck.

The captain wanted red. Two lords had been squabbling over the town for a generation, one from the river and one from the hill road, and the captain meant to sit between them with a crest that answered to both. So Mateo lacquered each shield the colour of a wet brick, riveted the edges so tight a blade would skid off them, and painted an eagle across the boss with two heads and wings spread wide. He shaded every feather in grey and black until it looked like it might tear itself free of the iron and fly off over the rooftops.

By the fourth hour a girl knocked at the back door, soaked from the river, with a scrap of paper sewn into her hem. The western lord had opened the hill road to the enemy. Mateo read it twice, then went back to his bench and turned the last shield over in his hands. He had painted the second head looking west, toward the road, the way the captain had asked. Then, in the dark, with the lamp hissing, he had nudged the brush a finger's width and made that head look straight at the enemy's banners instead.

At dawn the men on the walls lifted those shields, and the sun came up red behind the iron. Down on the hill road, the western lord's soldiers saw two eagles staring back at them and stopped dead in the mud. Mateo lived to be very old. He never told the captain what he had done with that brush, and that, boy, is why I always check the lamp before I start a rivet.
