Dove carrying a red heart on the back

Fine line · Back · Mixed · Photo

A small dove in flight is shown in soft grey shading with fine dark linework on the outline of its wings and body. It holds a thin red outlined heart in its beak, which is the only colour in the design. The tattoo sits on pale skin beside dark hair and a grey top, with the bird placed off-centre against the shoulder blade.

Sit down, the lot of you. The guard will keep us here until he has finished his soup, so you may as well hear about the bird that crossed the Vorka bridge without a passport. Everyone on the east bank knew it. The widow Halina Strand kept the post office in a lean-to by the water, and every Thursday she opened the cage on the sill and let the grey dove go west.

She had a son over the river, a clerk in a town whose name changed with the flags. Letters went by cart and came back with the seals broken, so she sent them by the bird instead, folded small and tied to its leg. Then one spring the letters stopped coming back at all, and she began sending something else. She pressed a red heart out of tin, no bigger than a thumbnail, and threaded it on silk cord so the bird could hold it in its beak like a ribbon. If he cannot read it, she told the sergeant, he will at least know it is mine.

The sergeant was Teodor, young and nervous, and his orders said to fire at anything that moved over the wire. He fired once. The dove dropped into the reeds, and he waded out expecting a corpse and found a warm body with the little heart still caught in its beak. He carried it across the bridge himself that evening, inside his coat, and knocked on a door in the western town to ask for a clerk named Piotr Strand.

The clerk came to the step in his shirtsleeves. Teodor held out the heart without a word. Piotr turned it over, saw the knot in the cord was tied the way his mother tied everything, and laughed until he had to sit down on the step. Then he wrote three words on a scrap of paper, folded it into Teodor's palm, and asked him to take it back. So Teodor walked it home through the reeds, to the place where the bird had fallen, and left it there under a stone for the next one to find.
