Small outline heart on the upper chest

Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A small heart outline sits on the upper chest near the collarbone, with the rest of the shoulder and neck in soft focus. The linework is a single thin black line with an even weight and no shading inside the heart. The photograph is black and white, and the grey fabric of a top pulled down at the shoulder frames the tattoo at the centre of the composition.

Dear Marguerite, I have been turning your postcard over all week, the one with the Blackpool tower on it, trying to work out whether the reunion invitation was a dare or an apology. Either way I am going. I have bought a new kettle, practised the word accountant in the bathroom mirror so I do not sound like the girl who got sent to the head for drawing on the chemistry bench, and found the blue biro you lent me in 1998, which I never gave back. It still writes, which is more than I can say for the rest of us.

The school is being knocked down in the spring, so the caretaker let me walk the top corridor on Tuesday after the dentist. Mr Okonedo's room is still there at the end, its radiator knocking like someone wanting in. On the whiteboard, under a fortnight of forgotten timetables, somebody had drawn a single heart in green marker and rubbed half of it away. It made me think of the one you drew in the back of my geography book, one unbroken line with nothing inside it, because you said shading was showing off. I told you then it was the most honest thing anyone had ever done to my exercise book.

I went through the drawer this morning and the old geography book was still there, the cover soft as cloth. Your heart is on page nine, a bit wobbly where you were laughing. I have decided I am bringing it to the reunion, along with the biro, and I expect you to bring something to draw on.

Meet me under the clock at half seven. If the caretaker asks, we are only looking for something we lost.

Yours, Pauline
