Shaded feather tattoo on the side ribs
Realism · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A large feather is tattooed on the side of the torso, angled diagonally with its tip pointing towards the lower back. The feather is rendered in soft black and grey shading with fine barbs and a defined central shaft, giving it a dimensional, realistic look. The warm, pale background and the grey top keep the focus on the tattoo against the skin.

She carried it up the hill to her aunt's kitchen, where the range was still warm from breakfast, and spread a tea towel across the table. The oil came off with washing-up liquid and patience. Each barb had to be drawn back into place with a thumb and two fingers, slow as threading a needle, until the feathers lay flat and dark and gleaming like wet slate. Her aunt Bet watched from the doorway and said nothing, which was how she said most things.
Three days later the bird stood up on its own, shook itself and looked at Nell with the disdain of creatures who have never needed forgiving. She carried it down to the end of the breakwater on the turn of the tide and set it on the wet stone. It went off low over the water, almost brushing the swell, and was past the lighthouse before she could find it again.
A single flight feather had come loose in the box. She kept it in the drawer with her father's pencils and took it out on the mornings the fleet went out, holding it against the glass of the net loft window. Its shadow fell across the bench in a long grey slant, always pointing towards the harbour mouth, as if it knew the way out better than the boats did.
