Dove carrying keys on the ribs

Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A bird, resembling a dove, is shown in flight with its beak holding a fine chain. Two ornate keys with heart-shaped bows hang from the chain, rendered with soft grey shading and dark outlines. The tattoo sits on the side of the torso against bare skin, with the photo framed from the waist up.

The dove came to our shop window the week the wire arrived for Teddy Pell, and it sat on the sill tapping at the glass as if it had been sent to collect something. My father said it was only a bird. I said it had a chain in its beak, and when he looked up from the vice he went quiet and reached for the brass blanks.

He cut two keys that Thursday, one for the front door of the Pell cottage on Chapel Lane and one for the tin box under the bed where Mrs Pell kept the savings book. She had asked for hearts, so he gave them heart-shaped bows and filed the wards so fine you could barely see the teeth. He hung them on a length of fine chain and sent me up the hill with them, but the dove got there first. It was waiting on the lych gate when I rounded the corner, and it took the chain in its beak as though it had always belonged to it.

Mrs Pell was at the window. She saw the bird come down the path with the keys swinging beneath it, and she came out in her apron with her hand over her mouth. Teddy's letter had said missing, not dead, and for a month she had been holding those two words apart in her head like the halves of a broken plate. The dove dropped the chain on her step and went up over the roof.

I picked the keys up. The front one was still warm from the bird. When she turned it in the lock, the door opened the way it always had, as if nothing had ever been taken from the house at all.
