Hand holding a small flower bouquet on an upper arm
Botanical · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of a hand gripping a loose bunch of flowers and foliage, with a cuff or band at the wrist. The design uses dark black linework with light hatching in the hand and leaves, and no colour. The tattoo sits centre frame on a bare upper arm against a white top and a wooden floor.

Come closer, the lot of you, and mind the hot cider. I'll tell you about Harrow's Travelling Wonders, the year the fair came down the Lune with a broken axle and a hand that wouldn't let go. You'll not have seen a hand like it. Old Mercy Quill kept it in a glass case between the fortune tent and the goat, and it was carved from pale boxwood, cuff at the wrist, fingers curled round nothing at all.

The lad who minded the case was Tobias Brent, fourteen and fond of mischief. One wet night he took the hand out to show a girl from the village, and the moment his palm closed on it, something warm ran up his arm. Next morning there were wild roses and sprigs of rosemary threaded through his fingers, cold with dew, and the hand had gone still. Mercy found him crying in the caravan with a bunch of hedgerow flowers pressed against his chest.
She didn't scold him. She took the bouquet, tied it with a bit of red wool, and walked him out to the riverbank where the fair was packing up. "A hand that holds a thing must give it away," she said, "or it holds you." So Tobias gave the flowers to the first stranger who walked past, a grey-haired woman with a limp, and the woman gave him a shilling and a name for the next town.
And the hand? It sits in the case still, clean as a bone, with the wool still knotted at its wrist. Mind you, if you're ever passing and it looks at you the way a hand does when it's reaching, don't you be the one to take it.
