Hand mixer outline on the inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single black line drawing of an appliance resembling a hand mixer, with a rounded body, a handle and a trailing cord ending in a plug. The linework is thin and even, with no shading or fill, and the ink is a uniform dark grey-black against the skin. The design sits diagonally on the inner wrist, with a hand visible at the top left of the frame.

The mixer has been in the farmhouse kitchen since before the milking parlour was rebuilt, and in January it still does the one job it was bought for: whisking the eggs for the Sunday sponge, because the hens are laying again and nobody has the heart to waste them. You plug it in by the back door, where the cord just reaches, and the boards are cold through your socks. Outside, the yard is frozen into ruts and Harold's dog is barking at nothing in the lane.

The cord is the problem. It is four feet long and the nearest socket is the one above the bread bin, so every bowl of batter becomes a negotiation. Your mother called it the leash. She stood at the sink for thirty years with her elbow at the same angle, and you have inherited the angle along with the recipe card, its corners soft with flour and a grease ring from a bowl of dripping that predates you.

Then the lights go. The whole valley goes dark at once, the fridge sighs and stops, and the mixer falls silent with the beaters still turning in the cold batter. You stand in the grey window light with the plug in your hand, listening to the hens shuffle in the barn, and you realise you were never going to cook anything tonight. You unplug it, wrap the cord twice around the handle the way she always did, and reach for the matches for the lamp.
