Doves and pocket watch sleeve tattoo
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A photograph of a large sleeve tattoo on a man's arm, with two doves in flight and a pocket watch with Roman numerals. The soft clouds behind the birds and the watch are shaded in smooth greys, with detailed feathers and metal casing. The arm is shown at an angle against a wooden bench and lockers, with a maroon t-shirt covering the shoulder.

The snow had sealed the Hollin Pass for three days, and the inn at Crowbeck was running short of everything except tea and bad news. You keep the loft above the stables, where eleven grey doves have not flown since October. Your grandfather bred them to carry word down to the valley when the telegraph wire snapped, and you have never let them out in weather.

On the third night a lamp appears on the far slope, too low to be a car, and you climb to the window with his pocket watch in your palm. It is silver and dented on the back, the Roman numerals worn pale where his thumb used to rest. The watch has stopped, as it always does when you are frightened, so you wind it and count the seconds until the cold makes your fingers useless.
At first light you open the loft hatch. The first bird drops out like a thrown handful of ash, then the next, and the wind lifts them through a rift in the cloud until they are only pale marks against grey. You tie a message roll to the last dove's leg, because it will not go without something to carry, and you watch until the sky closes over them.
By noon the dove is back on the sill, shaking snow from its wings. The band holds a scrap in a stranger's hand: Road open. Come down. You open the watch and find the hands sitting at a quarter past the hour, as though it had kept time all along and only needed someone to listen for it.
