Torn skin revealing Canadian flag on calf
Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows skin peeling back to reveal a red and white flag with a red maple leaf, with the torn edges rendered in shaded grey and skin tones. Smooth gradients and soft shading give the flag folds and depth, and the red ink dominates the design. The design wraps around the calf, and the photo shows only the leg, grey trousers and a tiled floor.

Mags had the rope over her shoulder and the mooring pin in her fist when the Lune tipped the hull towards the wall, and that was the first time she saw the flag under the paint. Someone had painted it over years ago, a joke or a dare, and the rust had lifted it in blisters along the cabin side until the red showed through like something trying to get out.

Her uncle Ivo had bought the Marigold in Preston for the price of a used van, and he never once talked about where he'd been before the barge. What he did talk about was the leaf. He said it was the only shape a man could draw from memory, five points and a notch, and any child could do it on a napkin. He drew it for her on the back of a lock-keeper's form the summer she turned nine, then showed her how to scrape the rust with a wire brush until the edges sat clean.
Now the wire brush was in her hand again, and the cabin side was blistering in the same place. She worked in the drizzle with a tin of red primer open on the gunwale, and each stroke lifted a curl of old paint like peeled skin. Under it the flag held its colour, bold and a little stubborn, as if it had only been waiting for someone to notice.
When the last patch was done she stepped back onto the towpath and saw the whole length of it, shining wet in the lock light. Ivo had left her the boat, and the boat had left her a job. She wrote the date in pencil on the inside of the hatch, beneath his, and went to find the kettle.
