Skull, roses and hooded figure on a calf

Realism · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo covers the lower leg with a large skull at the top, a pistol and roses on the left, and banknotes with a dollar-style symbol at the centre. A hooded figure appears on the right and a skull in a top hat sits at the bottom of the frame. The work uses smooth grey shading and fine detail with no colour, and the photograph is taken at an angle on a carpet.

Nobody in Saltgate had ever seen Tobias Wren lose a hand, which was why the men at the Anchor let him deal the Thursday game. On the night the cannery shut its gates, he sat under the brass lamp with a fan of folded dollar notes he had won off a Liverpool purser and stacked them like a man building a wall against the weather.

The stranger in the corner wore a black oilskin hood and never touched his gin. Each time the pot grew, the lamp seemed to sink a notch lower, and the cards went soft at the edges like wet bread. Wren kept winning. The pistol lay on the table beside his cufflinks, a habit from the years he had spent collecting debts for other men, and he laid it down as a stake because it was the only thing in the room he was sure of.

When the last hand came, the hooded man turned up a card that was just a skull in a top hat, grinning as if it had been waiting all evening to be seen. Wren reached for the notes, and his fingers closed on nothing but a rose, dry as paper, its petals curled like old receipts. The cannery whistle blew at six. He walked out into the frost with the rose in his fist and the pistol still on the table, and he never dealt another card in Saltgate.
