Black ink dragon tattoo in a Japanese style, coiling from the side of the abdomen across the hip and down onto the thigh.

Dragon tattoo wrapping hip and thigh

Japanese · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A large dragon with a whiskered head and clawed forelimbs curls from the side of the abdomen across the hip and down the outer thigh. The linework is black and fairly bold, with scale texture and shading along the body and fins. The skin is tanned and beaded with water, and the composition shows the tattoo against a blurred beach background.

The wheel was already turning when I finished the dragon, so I had to paint with a gondola swinging past my nose every eleven seconds. Gerald said nobody would notice if the whiskers came out wonky. Gerald said a lot of things from the generator end of the field, usually with a roll-up in his mouth and his back to the weather.

We'd bought the Big Wheel off a bankrupt pier outfit in Skegness, and its gondolas were as bare as church pews. My father had painted the sign on every fair we ever worked, and when he died in February I took his brushes out of the tin without asking anyone. The dragon was the first thing I did on my own. I gave it a long body that wound down the outer panel and round the spokes, scales as small as lentils, a red tongue like a strip of tinsel.

A boy of about nine came round every evening with a bag of chips and watched me work. On the last night before we struck the camp, he asked which way the dragon was looking. I said back towards the ticket booth, where the money was. He shook his head. "It's looking at the wheel. It wants to go round with it."

We packed up in the morning and the rig went on to the next town. At the first stop it rained sideways, and when I climbed up with a tin of black to touch up the whiskers, the boy was there again, holding the ladder steady with both hands. The wheel groaned into motion above us and the dragon went round with it, scales catching the lights. I dipped the brush and kept it wet, because in this trade you have to keep something wet or it cracks.
