Black dragon tattoo across hip and thigh

Japanese · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A black ink dragon with a serpentine body, whiskers and a detailed head curls from the hip down across the upper thigh. The linework is bold with scale texture and shading in the body, and the skin is glossy with water droplets. The composition places the tattoo diagonally across the frame beside a white mesh bikini and a navel piercing.

The lamp at Skerrin Head went dark twice that winter, and both times the sea came up the cliff steps with a sound like chain being dragged across stone. Keeper Tomas Pell had no patience for ghost talk. He trimmed the wick, polished the lens with his sleeve, and wrote each failure in the log in a hand that did not shake.

On the third night a serpent came up out of the surf below the tower. It was longer than the boathouse, black as wet slate, with whiskers that trailed in the spray and a head that rose level with the gallery rail. It said it had swallowed many lights in its time and would not swallow this one, but it wanted the beam kept burning every dusk without fail. In return it would coil round the reef and keep the ships off the teeth of the rocks. Tomas asked what it would take to be sure of the bargain. The serpent set one claw on the iron rail, and the rail sang.

The arrangement held for years. Each night the dragon wound itself round the foot of the tower, and its scales caught the turning beam and threw it back across the water, so the fishing boats saw the reef like a row of broken teeth and steered wide. Tomas grew old. His daughter took the lamp after him, then her son, and the log filled with ordinary weather.

In the autumn the keeper's grandson climbed the stair with a pail and found the gallery empty and the sea flat as a plate. The serpent had gone. On the whitewashed wall below the lamp room lay a long curling smear of soot, black as ink, that no amount of scrubbing would lift. His grandmother said it was the dragon's farewell, and that a light kept faithfully always leaves its mark on whatever keeps it company.
