Dragonfly across the upper chest
Realism · Chest · Colour · Photo
A large dragonfly is tattooed across the upper chest, with its wings spread wide and its body running down the centre of the sternum. The wings are shaded orange and yellow with dark black stripes and soft grey shadows along the veins, while the body is purple and blue with a red head. The subject sits centrally in the frame against warm skin, and the wearer's floral lace bustier is visible at the bottom edge.

Mind the cattle grid, it bites, and sit where the shade falls, because the road out past Corrigan's Well has eaten better men than you. I'll tell you about the dragonfly, since you asked, though it wasn't a fly and it wasn't a dragon. It was the colour of a marigold left out in the rain, with stripes on its wings like the bars of a cell someone had painted over in a hurry.

Old Ada Pring ran the petrol pump at the Well for forty years. The summer the bore dried, she swore the thing came down out of a white sky and hung over her tin roof, red-headed and purple along the body, humming like a wire in the wind. Nobody believed her. Then the dust came up off the salt flat and two drovers went missing, and Ada went out with a jerrycan and a lamp, following a flicker that kept stopping just ahead of her.
She walked until the road was only a rumour. The dragonfly kept to the air above the heat shimmer, dipping whenever her feet were about to give up on her. At dawn it settled on a fence post beside the two men, both sitting in a dry gully with cracked mouths and boots full of sand. It lifted and flew north. Ada gave them the last of the water, then followed it home.
The road still bends there, and the drovers still tell it. On a clear night you can see the dragonfly, pale gold, turning slow over the dry lake, waiting for someone foolish enough to walk after it.
