Draped chain line tattoo on a shoulder
Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of a shoulder and upper arm with a fine line tattoo of several swagged chains hanging in curves, each with small dots and drops along the lines. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the design wraps down the outer arm. A grey tank top strap and a 'TATTOO SHOP' sign sit in the background.

Nadia had the lift out of service again, so she climbed the fourteen floors with the box under one arm and the chain looped over her wrist like a bracelet. Her uncle's chandelier had come down in the August flood, and the man at the ironmongers had said the glass drops were Victorian, which meant nothing to her except that they were worth saving. Every one had to be unhooked, cleaned and threaded back onto the brass swags in the right order.

On the landing the window onto the car park was fogged with the heat. She set the box on the sill and sat on the step with the first swag across her knees. The chain was fine as hair, each link hung with a bead the size of a lentil, and the curve between two hooks dipped the same way every time, as if someone had measured the drape with a thread before fixing it. She counted under her breath. Eleven drops on the top run, nine on the next, seven on the third, the numbers shrinking as the swags came down like the hem of a dress.
The lift hummed back into life below her. Doors opened, someone swore at a pram, and Nadia kept working with sticky fingers from the cleaning cloth until the last drop slid onto its hook with a small sound like a coin dropped on tile.
She carried the chandelier home the way she had brought it, one armful at a time, and hung it in the front room where the afternoon light came through and threw long, wavering shadows across the wallpaper. Her uncle would have said it looked like a waterfall that had been stopped halfway. Nadia thought it looked like a curtain of rain that had finally agreed to hang still.
