Fine line geometric band on an upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A slim band of fine black linework runs across the inner upper arm, centred on a small diamond with a radiating mark above and below. Arrow shapes and curled scrolls extend outwards on both sides, with hatched lines filling the central section. The arm is raised against a plain pale wall, with a grey sleeve visible at the left edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Okafor's walled garden in Suffolk had a gate nobody could open without a fight, and the ironwork was the reason. Her husband had forged it the year before he died, and the latch sat where a child's hand could never reach. I was nineteen, sent over from the forge in Bury to rehang it, and I spent my first morning with a wire brush and a tin of linseed oil, working rust out of a pattern I could not yet read.

Scrolls curled outwards from a central diamond, a small hammered square with a tongue of flame above it and a star burst below. Between them ran rows of fine arrows, every one pointing the same way, towards the house. I asked her why. She said the arrows were for the winter, so the frost would know which way the roses faced and leave them be. I laughed, then saw she was not joking, and I stopped.

For three weeks I drew that gate on the back of feed sacks while the bars cooled in the yard. I got the diamond wrong four times. Each time she came out with a mug of tea, looked at the sketch without comment, and tapped the paper where the scroll ought to turn. By the fifth attempt my hand had learned the curve without me.

On my last afternoon she gave me the small file her husband had used on the arrowheads, its handle worn pale. Hang every bar you make so it points home, she said. The gate swung shut behind me on its new hinge, and I heard the latch drop into its place, true as a bell.
