You'll laugh, but I've been hanging the old dreamcatcher from the galley beam like Mr Ogunleye showed us at the Sunderland docks. Tom Bell swapped it with me for a tin of peaches and a promise to scrub the potato pot. The hoop is willow, a bit scorched on one side from the time the lamp tipped, and the feathers are gulls' the boys brought back from the breakwater. Every night I tie the lamp off and let the web catch whatever's floating round the cabin. Mostly it's coal dust and somebody's bad singing.

I keep thinking about the word Mam had stitched on my sampler, the one you said was too small to read. Dreamer. I used to think it was a fancy way of saying lazy. Now I think it means keeping one eye on the horizon while your hands are full. I'll post this at Madeira if the mail boat's kind. Save me a seat by the fire, and tell Dad the stew needed more salt, not less.
