Dreamcatcher and flower on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A dreamcatcher with a large eight-petal flower at its centre, ringed by a row of spikes and hung with three feathers and beaded cords. The design uses bold black outlines with solid black shading on the feathers and ring, and red and white fills in the flower petals. The tattoo runs down the forearm and fills most of the frame against a dark shirt in the background.

Dear Tom, the caravan finally has its hooks in, so I can tell you the thing from the Saturday market is hanging above the bed where the draught used to come through. Mrs Okafor swapped it for the brass kettle, which I suspect was a bad bargain for her. The ring is wire wrapped in old cricket tape, and whoever made the flower in the middle took more care over it than the rest of the stall put together.

I didn't believe a word of the story the stallholder told me, about nets that catch the bad dreams and let the good ones slip through the hole. But I've been sleeping since Thursday, which I can't say for most of last year. The three feathers turn when the door opens, and the red petals catch the light from the harbour lamp so the whole thing seems lit from inside.
Last night a gull got into the bins outside and the spikes around the rim started ticking against one another like a clock. I lay there counting and didn't wake once. This morning I found the beaded cords knotted into a bundle, as if something had been sorting through them in the dark and given up.
Come down at Easter if you can. Bring the box of your father's records and we'll hang them on the nail by the door. There's room for one more thing up there, and I think the flower would like the company.
Love, Mum
