Family dreamcatcher on upper arm

Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A dreamcatcher with a braided hoop, a fine webbing of thread and three feathers hanging below sits on the upper arm. The word Family is written in cursive script across the upper left of the hoop. The linework is dark and clean, with shaded feathers, and the piece is shown in black ink against warm skin tones and a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Your gran's hands are faster than the light in the net loft, so you watch the needle rather than her face while the last boats knock against the quay outside. "Mesh first, then the knot," she says, the way she has said it every wet Tuesday since you were six. Your knots slip. She unpicks them without comment and laughs when you swear.

The loft smells of tar and cold rope. She bends a willow switch cut from the orchard fence into a hoop, binds it with braided twine, then strings a web across it, pulling each thread taut until the centre sits like a small bright eye. "Catches the bad dreams," she says. "Lets the good ones through." You tell her nets are for fish. She ties three gull feathers to the bottom, grey-tipped and salt-stiff, picked off the slipway after the gale.

The winter the boats stopped going out, the hoop hung above the kettle and she stopped laughing at your knots. After the funeral you found the loft key in her apron pocket and climbed the ladder alone. The hoop was still there, dusty, and pinned to its web was a card in her looping hand: For the family, when it's your turn to hold the needle.

You take it down that evening and hang it on your own front door, where the harbour wind comes up the steps. The feathers lift and settle, lift and settle, and you find your fingers already moving, looping thread, pulling it tight.
