Dreamcatcher and peacock feather on the abdomen

Realism · Other · Colour · Photo

A colour tattoo of a dreamcatcher with a woven web, beads and a Celtic knot hangs from a small loop above two dark feathers and a large peacock feather with a small round emblem. The shading is soft and detailed, with teal, green and red-brown tones on the feathers and frame. The tattoo sits centrally on a bare midriff, with several hands and a pair of jeans in the frame.

The peacock feather came over on the Tuesday boat, wrapped in a tea towel and tucked inside a tin of biscuits, and I was the one who found it. Nobody else on Eilean Dubh would have looked twice at a bird's tail in a parcel meant for the shop. I held it up to the window and the light went green, then blue, then a sort of bruised gold, and I forgot the kettle entirely.

The parcel was from my brother Calum, who had gone south to work on the rigs and had not written since the spring. Inside the tin, under the feather, was a hoop of willow he had bent himself, a bead of blue glass threaded on a length of waxed cord, and a card with a knot drawn on it, three loops chasing each other round like dogs after their own tails. He never could draw. The knot was the best thing he had ever sent me.

I spent three nights knotting the web. Dreamcatchers are not for sleeping, my mother used to say, they are for catching the things you do not want to dream about, and then you have to let them go. I wove the net tight in the middle and loose at the edge, set the blue bead at the crown, and hung two grey gull feathers from the bottom with the peacock feather between them, its eye turned out to the room.

On the fourth morning the post came again with a Portsmouth postmark. It said he was coming home on the Thursday boat and nothing else, which was Calum all over. I hung the finished piece above the door, where the wind off the sound could reach it, and left the window open all night so whatever it caught would have somewhere to go.
