Rain had been falling on the Thursday market since before dawn, and Marta the basket-seller had given up trying to keep her willow dry. She sat under the awning with a hoop of bent wood across her knees, winding grey thread across it, and watched the lane turn to mud beneath the stalls.

The miller's son came by at noon with his collar up and his face the colour of paste. He had not slept for a month, he said. Every night a crow came to the foot of his bed and told him the mill wheel would stop, and every morning he woke with the taste of river water in his mouth. Marta did not ask what he wanted. She went to the rose seller's barrow, took three pink roses the rain had not yet bruised, and pinned them to the hoop with thorn-stitch.

She wove the web from the centre out, the way her mother had, leaving a small hole at the heart for whatever was good to pass through. She strung blue glass beads on fine cord and hung them down, and tied on the grey feathers she had kept from a jay that drowned in the millrace. The leaves she cut from a dark holly bough.

That night the crow came as usual, found the net, and tangled there until morning. Marta went down to the mill the next market day and was paid in bread and a little silver, and the miller's son, when she passed him in the lane, was whistling.
