Dreamcatcher, roses and feather design sketch

Neo-trad · Colour · Flash

A pencil drawing of a tattoo design on white paper, showing a dreamcatcher with a webbed centre and beaded fringe, two shaded roses and a large feather. The outlines are dark and the shading is done in red pencil, with the petals and feathers built up with hatching. The composition is a tall, diagonal arrangement, with the dreamcatcher at the top, one rose above and one below, and the feather running down the right side.

By the time the speeches start you have already counted the roses on the centrepieces twice, and there are eleven on each table, one more than the florist promised. Your cousin Dee has pinned a dreamcatcher to the back of your chair, a hoop of willow wrapped in red thread, its web crooked where she caught it on the coat rack. She says her nan made it in 1971 and nobody else is allowed to touch it.

The best man stands up and tells the story about the lost ring, the hotel car park and the bin lorry. You laugh in the right places. Across the room the bride is trying to untangle a string of wooden beads that has wound itself through her bouquet ribbon, and you go over without being asked, because you were always the one who could work a knot loose with a hatpin and patience.

Her fingers are shaking. "It's the feather," she says. The long feather tied to the hoop has swung into the cake knife more than once tonight. You ease the string free bead by bead while the room claps for the first dance. She tells you the web is meant to catch bad dreams and let good ones slide through the middle, and that Dee's nan always said the hole was the important part.

When you hand the bouquet back, the red ribbon lies straight and one bead has slipped onto your little finger. She laughs, and you leave it there for the rest of the night, a small hard ring of wood that is not a ring at all.
