Peony line drawing with leaves

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

The drawing shows a large open peony at the centre with a smaller peony bud beside it, surrounded by several pointed leaves. The linework is a single dark outline with fine internal lines for petals and leaf veins, and there is no shading. The design fills most of the sheet, set on pale translucent paper with yellow material visible at the edges.

The peony at the wood's edge has been there longer than the church bell, and you have been told not to dig it up. Mrs Haddow's cottage stands at the last gate before the trees, and her garden runs down in terraces to a stile where the path goes into the birches. Every June the open head of it spills out like a pleated skirt, and every June the men from the mill say it smells of money, which is their way of wanting something.

You are twelve and have been sent with a trug and a knife to cut three stems for the altar. Mrs Haddow is on her knees in the bed, pulling bindweed from the roots with her bare hands. She does not look up. "Take the bud," she says. "Not the open one. The open one has given all it had."

You take the bud, which is tight and furred at the seam, its leaves folded round it like a hand around a coin. The wood behind her is quiet in the particular way of a place that is listening. A jay shouts once and stops.

On the walk back you pause at the stile and turn the bud over in your palm, and you understand that it is not closed at all. It is only waiting for the right kind of weather, the way a letter waits in a drawer. You slip it into your coat and tell nobody. When the altar cloth is changed in July, a single pale head sits in the brass vase with its petals pulled loose, and nobody asks who chose it.
